GAMES TO CURE YOUR SUMMER BOREDOM!

School is almost out and your kids may already be complaining that they’re bored! When your kids come inside saying that they’ve run out of things to do, you can be prepared with the lists below:

BASKETBALL GOAL GAMES

S-N-A-C-K

Put a little twist on the game of H-O-R-S-E – an oldie, but goodie! The first player picks a spot to shoot a basket. If he makes it, the second player must make a basket from the same spot in order to avoid being assigned an “S.” If he doesn’t make it, the second player gets to choose his own spot to shoot a basket. If he makes it, the first player then must make a basket from the same spot in order to avoid an “S.” If there are more than 2 players, each “round” continues until someone misses a basket and is assigned a letter: S-N-A-C-K. When a player receives all 5 letters, he or she is out of the game. The last player to be in the game gets to eat a special snack (and share with the rest of his or her friends!)

KNOCK-OUT

Use a piece of sidewalk chalk to make a line at a distance from the goal that seems to match the skill level and age of your players. All players stand single-file behind the line and the first two players hold basketballs. The first player shoots and must try to make a basket before the second player makes a basket. If the first player makes his basket first, he gets his ball and gives it to the next person in line. If the second player makes his basket first, the first player is out of the game until the next round.

TRAMPOLINE GAMES

BALLOON POP

Blow up (overinflating is helpful) 5-10 balloons and then place them all on the trampoline. The kids should try to pop the balloons without using their hands.

Popping a balloon in this way is harder than it sounds, but kids will surely have fun trying!

ADD-ON

The first child performs a “move” – one jump, touching his toes, a knee jump, toe touch, etc. The next child will then perform the first child’s “move” and then add on one of his own. The game continues until it’s too hard to remember everything. Clues are allowed if everyone wants to keep the game going for longer!

PLAYSET GAMES

RELAY RACES

Set up a timed or untimed relay race for the kids. You may want to add other stations around the backyard or just keep it confined to your play set. Time kids as they climb the rock wall, do the monkey bars, swing 10 times on the swings and then slide down the slide. Encourage them to try again and decrease their time or have two kids race each other if your play set allows.

WATER PARK

Turn your sprinklers towards your play set and get your kids in their swimsuits! Their slide is now a water slide, (you could even put a baby pool at the bottom) and it’s a whole lot cooler (in more ways than one!) to swing in the “rain.” (**playsets and slides can become slippery. So be careful!)

Healthy Snack Ideas for Families on the Go!

Reprinted with permission from BroccoliCupcake.com:

Do you struggle to come up with healthy, but convenient snack ideas for busy days?  Do you find yourself choosing convenience over nutrition because you’re out of time?  I recently took a survey on my Facebook page and found that the majority of respondents said lack of fast/convenient food choices is the number one obstacles to healthy eating.  I expected it to be a cost or taste issue, but I’m glad it’s not, because those are a little more challenging to overcome.

I agree, healthy choices can be time consuming.  Especially if you don’t love raw fruits and veggies.  When we started this journey, I found it nearly impossible to find healthy snacks I could carry in my diaper bag to keep the boys happy. I felt like I was making excuses every time I walked into our chiropractor office and handed the boys a snack to keep them occupied while I got an adjustment.  But she always encouraged me and over time we did find things that worked.  Some of it was learning to like new things, some of it was trial and error and some was stumbling upon a few awesome brands that really care and make it easy (or easier) to choose healthy – even on the go.

In an effort to eliminate – or at least diminish – this particular obstacle to eating healthy, I’ve put together a list of healthy snack ideas that are good at home or on the go.  You can download a copy here (Healthy Snack Ideas) to hang on the fridge or carry in your purse the next time you head to the grocery store.  I’ve also listed them below.  If you have other suggestions, please post them in the comments or pin them to pinterest and leave us a link to your board.  You can never have too many ideas for healthy, easy snacks.

Whole Food Ideas

I try to keep lots of fresh fruits and veggies on hand all the time.  They are so easy to grab on the way out the door to TaeKwonDo and they’re pretty filling as far as snacks go.  When I’m heading out to run errands I always grab a small bag of raw cashews and a piece of fruit to carry in my purse so I won’t be tempted to stop for something less nutritious.  If you don’t like plain veggies fill the bottom of an old plastic peanut butter jar with your favorite flavor of hummus, homemade dressing or nut butter and drop in some celery sticks or bell pepper slices. Here are some other suggestions.

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Grapes
  • Clementines
  • Bell Pepper Slices
  • Celery Sticks
  • Carrot Sticks
  • Cucumber slices
  • Almonds (raw)
  • Cashews (raw)
  • Pistachios
  • Hard boiled eggs (you’ll need an ice pack for this one)
  • Dried Fruit

Packaged Food Ideas

I try not to make these my first choice, but there are definitely crazy days when I’m so glad to have a super convenient option that requires virtually no effort on my part.  I think of it like this.  There are good choices, there are better choices and then there are the best choices.  We can’t always be perfect, but we can try to make a healthier choice.  Below are some super easy, super convenient packaged snacks that I feel good about feeding myself and my family.

  • Blue Diamond Nut Thins (lots of great flavors and fun to stack when you’re eating them at home.)
  • Raisins
  • GoGo Squeeze (applesauce on-the-go with no added sugar or preservatives)
  • Chobani Greek yogurt cups (you have to keep these cold, but they’re a great option for at home, school lunches or if you have time to throw something in a bag with an ice pack)
  • Three Sisters Honey Oaties (We were big Cheerio fans around here back in the day, but switched to this brand we found at Whole Foods.  It’s all natural, tastes great and eco-conscious.)
  • Food Should Taste Good chips (Everyone should try these chips!  Multi-grain and Sweet Potato are my favorite flavors.)
  • Udi’s Granola (I eat it as a cereal with almond milk on top when I don’t have time to make breakfast.  It’s great in Greek yogurt and an easy snack to carry along in my purse.)
  • Good Health/Natural Foods Veggie Sticks (These are a favorite of the boys in the house.  We pack them for picnics, road trips, and on the go snacks.)
  • Salsa (Make it yourself or buy it and pack it to go…either way it’s a great on the go snack with healthier chips.)
  • String Cheese (We don’t eat a lot of dairy, but I do like organic string cheese for a quick and easy on the go snack.)
  • Hummus (Make your own or try the Sabra individual hummus cups.  They make on the go snacking tasty and easy. I’m a hummus addict so I LOVE this stuff.)
  • Nut Butter/Sunbutter (Sunbutter is our personal favorite.  I always have a few jars on hand to use as dip for apples and celery, to mix in granola bars or to make sandwiches.)
  • Somersault Snacks (Nut free nutrition loaded with protein from seeds.  They come in at least four flavors and they’re all good!)

Homemade Foods That Travel Well

I like to cook so I try to prepare at least a few homemade treats for snacking each week.  These aren’t just for grabbing on the go, but also for saving time at home on busy days.

  • Popcorn (popped on the stove or air popped)
  • Granola bars
  • Fruit Leathers
  • Trail Mix
  • Energy bites
  • Mason Jar salads

I’m sure there are tons of other options out there, but these are some of the staples around our house that keep us on track.  What do you snack on that’s nutritious, but super easy to grab on the go.

Woodplay Playsets: Sustainably in Tune with Nature

Want a high-quality play set for your children, but are also concerned about the environment? WOODPLAY Playsets from Happy Backyards is your answer!

WHY WOODPLAY?

From the redwood forest to your backyard, Woodplay makes environmentally sound choices a priority.

  • Redwood has dimensional stability. According to the Forest Products Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, redwood has less volumetric and tangential shrinkage. This means redwood stays flat and straight with minimal warping, cupping (the edges of the woods are high and its center is low) or checking (cracking).
  • Redwood resists disease and decay. Redwood contains tannin, which is harmless to humans and animals yet toxic to fungi. Fungal disease causes decay in other woods.
  • Redwood is naturally immune to insects.
  • Redwood’s strength and durability make our playset structures safe for heavy-duty use and kids of all sizes — including Dad.
  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends natural wood, like redwood, for outdoor playsets.
  • Our water-based wood stains are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and safe for our children, our pets, wildlife, and the air we breathe.
  • We aggressively recycle to keep materials out of the waste stream.
  • Through kanban (just-in-time) production practices, our optimal inventory levels use resources efficiently and save energy.
  • To reduce CO2 and other emissions, whenever possible we team with transit providers who participate in the U.S. EPA SmartWay® transport partnership.
  • Our redwood requires no dangerous chemical preservatives — unlike wood species that are pressure treated to artificially extend product life because redwood is naturally resistant to decay.

Protecting Your Family from the Flu

1. WASH YOUR HANDS for at least 20 seconds with soap and water! This is probably the number one thing you can do to prevent illness. Be sure your children are washing their hands often or using hand sanitizer (we love MD Mom that we sell at our sister store, USA Baby and Big Kids Too!)
2. Don’t touch your face. Even if germs are on your hands, they can’t enter the body unless you touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Teach your children to not touch their faces either. (You will be amazed at how many times you touch your face once you begin to pay attention!)
3. If your doctor recommends it, get a flu shot for your entire family! Often times doctor’s offices have special rooms set-up in the fall just for giving flu shots. So, it’s fast, easy and effective.
4. Don’t share food, drinks, lipstick/chapstick or toothpaste with other people, even family members. Germs can carry from one person to the other easily.
5. Avoid kissing on the lips of you feel yourself getting sick. (This is especially hard with young children, but try to refrain. Also, try to avoid letting people touch your baby’s hands as well.)
6. Clean doorknobs, bathrooms and children’s toys with disinfecting cleaner often.
7. Yogurt has been shown to stimulate production of an immune system substance that fights disease. So, eat up!
8. Let fresh air into your home at least once a week even if it is extremely cold outside. Studies have shown that the air inside your home is 2 to 5 times worse than the air outside. Allowing fresh air in will help to get stale, unhealthy air out and fresh air in!
9. Get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of water so that your body will be able to fight off illness.
10. STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK! No need to spread your germs to others!
